The first official mention of the city date back to 1789 year. Comrat was founded by colonists, settlers: Bulgarians, Greeks, Jews and people of other nationalities. In 1812, Bessarabia (with Comrat) was incorporated into Russia. In 1820 was founded Comrat cathedral.

   In 1906, the peasants of the village Comrat Bender of the county began the struggle for the division of landed estates, local government officials were arrested and Comrat proclaimed republic, which lasted for only 5 days. That revolt was crushed the royal troops.

   Status Comrat received in 1957.

   In times of MSSR functioned in the city plants: butter, wine, concrete products, worked production napless carpet with the Moldovan national ornament. In 1970 the population was 22 thousand inhabitants, and in 1989 - 26 thousand people.

   In 1991, Comrat opened National University. The first rector was Ivan Kristioglo. In the beginning was introduced in 1916 teaching courses in Russian, as well as items in the Gagauz, Bulgarian and Moldavian.

   In 1995, to address the population of Gagauzia Comrat became the capital of autonomy.
